We will be led through 12 wines, 6 white and 6 red, all from Downing's expansive and high quality cellars. Be warned, however, this is not a tasting for the faint-hearted! Seasons Greetings! 2. Termcard for 2008 3. Selection tastings and the Varsity Blind Wine Tasting match, 2008: Cambridge vs. Oxford ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Seasons Greetings! On behalf of the CUBWTS committee, may I wish you all a very enjoyable festive break and New Year! I'd like to thank everyone who has come along, or even tried to come along, to one of our many successful blind tastings this term. We hope that you have enjoyed the experience, enjoyed the wines and enjoyed the company. We've had some brilliant evenings with the session led by Bill Baker being my personal standout. I hope you'll all keep drinking (of course responsibly and blindly) over the holiday season. No doubt the chance to show off your new found tricks to family and friends will prove too much of a temptation for many of you! We look forward to seeing you all again next term. 2. Termcard for 2008 Our termcard for 2008 promises to be even more magical and entertaining than the already outstanding Michaelmas term. Confirmed tasters include past team members and venerable Bufties Ainsley Mayhew Seers and David Metcalfe, both truly entertaining individuals with fantastic wine expertise. We are also very proud to welcome back Fongyee Walker and Edward Ragg from China, for one week only, to give a tasting. Fongyee and Edward have been the driving force behind the society for the last few years and it will be great for 2007-8 members to share in their knowledge and enthusiasm. We also have tastings in the pipeline from Bacchanalia and the Hotel du Vin, plus some other special guests to be confirmed. Watch the website for further details. 3. Selection tastings and the Varsity Blind Wine Tasting match, 2008 Every year CUBWTS form a team of seven individuals (students only I'm afraid) to compete against Oxford University in the annual Varsity match, sponsored by Pol Roger. This is a fantastic experience and I encourage everyone to try out for the team! On top of the day out for the match - which takes place at the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall in London, the winning team receives an all expenses paid trip to Pol Roger in Champagne, where you will be fed and wined for several days! We have been amazed by the quality of tasters this year and there are many novices easily capable of making the team. We choose the Cambridge team in two selection tastings to be held on 20th and 27th January, 2008. In each of these tastings - to be led by Ainsley and David, respectively - you'll taste 12 wines blind just like in the format we've done all year. You will have 40 minutes for each flight of 6 wines (white and red). Ainsley and David will mark your tasting sheets and we will then announce the team; formed by the top seven tasters. In previous years we have found that some people have been put off from trying out for the team. Please do not be afraid of having a go! Everyone is in with a chance this year - even if you do not think you are good enough, do not be put off - you may surprise yourself! All scores will remain confidential, so we won't announce your score publicly. Being on the team really is great fun - between January and the match in late February you get to taste a more wine than you thought possible. It's a fantastic way to learn even more about the stuff than you already have. Plus you'll have competed, and hopefully been victorious, in a Varsity match! We should be able to have a fantastic team, in with a real chance to beat Oxford for the second year running - I hope everyone will consider giving it a go!!!! If you have any questions about the match please email me, James H (jkh35), Molly (mollycrockett at gmail.com) or Andy (asb56) - we have all previously been on the team and can tell you all about it! Please note: You will need to attend both selection tastings to be considered for the team. We will announce details of when these open in January. Get studying those booklets, get practicing and get drinking!!!!
